I have one important question. It is about scripture oṃ namo
nārāyaṇāya aṣṭākṣaramāhātmyaṃ
I found it here -
https://www.hinduscriptures.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/23F_Chapter_17.pdf
on page 62 there is written:
सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा स गच्छेत् परमां गतिम् ।
प्रथमेन तु लक्षेण आत्मशुद्धिर्भविष्यति ॥ १८
sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā sa gacchet paramāṃ gatim .
prathamena tu lakṣeṇa ātmaśuddhirbhaviṣyati .. 18..
द्वितीयेन तु लक्षेण मनुसिद्धिमवाप्नुयात् ।
तृतीयेन तु लक्षेण स्वर्गलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥ १९॥
dvitīyena tu lakṣeṇa manusiddhimavāpnuyāt .
tṛtīyena tu lakṣeṇa svargalokamavāpnuyāt .. 19..
चतुर्थेन तु लक्षेण हरेः सामीप्यमाप्नुयात् ।
पञ्चमेन तु लक्षेण निर्मलं ज्ञानमाप्नुयात् ॥ २०॥
caturthena tu lakṣeṇa hareḥ sāmīpyamāpnuyāt .
pañcamena tu lakṣeṇa nirmalaṃ jñānamāpnuyāt .. 20..
तथा षष्ठेन लक्षेण भवेद्विष्णौ स्थिरा मतिः ।
सप्तमेन तु लक्षेण स्वरूपं प्रतिपद्यते ॥ २१॥
tathā ṣaṣṭhena lakṣeṇa bhavedviṣṇau sthirā matiḥ .
saptamena tu lakṣeṇa svarūpaṃ pratipadyate .. 21..
अष्टमेन तु लक्षेण निर्वाणमधिगच्छति ।
स्वस्वधर्मसमायुक्तो जपं कुर्याद् द्विजोत्तमः ॥ २२॥
aṣṭamena tu lakṣeṇa nirvāṇamadhigacchati .
svasvadharmasamāyukto japaṃ kuryād dvijottamaḥ .. 22..
question is about word लक्षेण
In that pdf it is translated as "by lakh(s)", meaning "after/by
chanting om namo Narayanaya .. 100 000 (=lakh) time(s)" one will reach
certain result - Lord Hari (Vishnu, Narayana) or even liberation.
I am asking because there is russian translation which I found, there
is nothing like "by lakh(s)", but only written "by sign". So in
russian translation they simply enumerating those 8 "signs" of
chanter.
I think the meaning should be deeper, and there must be included lakhs
(chant oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya 100 000 - 800 000 times )
But I also know one scripture - Kali-santarana-upanishad. It is about
power of Hare Krishna mahamantra, and scripture prescribe to chant it
(Hare Krishna... Rama...) 35 000 000 to become freed from biggest
sins, samsara etc (told by Brahma to Narada Muni).
Thus it creates impression that these two mantras are so very much
different, having so different results of chanting. Looks like word
Narayana is much more powerful to eradicate sins etc comparing to
words Hare, Krishna and Rama.
So what is the real power of that mantra - om namo Narayanaya? What is
correct translation of texts 18-22 of this oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya
aṣṭākṣara-māhātmyaṃ from Narasimha Purana?
